Yes, there was a time when it would hardly have occurred to anyone that they needed a "blind spot" assistant. And that was even before the invention of the curved rear-view mirror, which makes a much larger area visible than a flat mirror can.
But then again, cars weren't built completely to the side and many cars even had 360-degree all-round visibility. Take the Barchettas, for example, which had no A, B and C pillars and therefore did not obstruct the view. A slight turn of the head was enough to get a good view of the surroundings, even in the Morgan Three Wheeler.
You could really do without an "assistant" .....
