The most valuable Mini in the world?
08/17/2014
Now it's back in every newspaper, on every online medium. A Ferrari 250 GTO from 1962 has broken the world auction record at Bonhams. An obviously wealthy fan bought the red racer for no less than USD 38 million.
It's easy for the little sensations to fall by the wayside, but there were some.
For us, the USD 181,500 that a collector paid for the Austin Mini Beach Car from 1962, the same year of birth as the GTO, is at least as surprising, if not more so.
In fact, only 14 such beach cars were built and the example auctioned at Bonhams changed hands for well over twice the estimated price, while the GTO just about lived up to expectations.
Incidentally, the auctioned GTO is probably not even the most expensive, as cars from the same series are said to have passed into new hands at higher prices.

The reappraisals of the RM and Gooding auctions will follow.
