Volvo and the seat belts
02/27/2012
At the beginning of the 1960s, seat belts slowly began to become established in cars. The car manufacturer Volvo led the way in their introduction and in safety in general. The 122 S, PV 544 and later P 1800 S models were equipped with two-point and later three-point seat belts as standard. However, because the public reacted skeptically, Volvo also supported the new safety equipment massively with advertising campaigns and PR.
In 1961, the Volvo people showed the effectiveness of the three-point seat belt with a practical demonstration - a rollover at 80 km/h. The driver got out of the dented car. The driver emerged from the dented car pale but uninjured, as ADAC Motorwelt No. 5/1961 reported on page 371.
But even after these pioneering deeds, Volvo kept the safety flag flying high, as the impressive advertisement from 1974 (above) proves.
You can read more about safety issues over the years in the various issues of Motorfahrer, Motorradfahrer and ADAC Motorwelt, as well as Automobil Revue in the Zwischengas magazine archive .
