We can hardly remember the times before Photoshop and the like. Yet it wasn't so long ago that image processing in newspaper production was manual and extremely physical. We can see an example here:
For the test of the BMW 507, the images were processed in several stages. First, the background was painted over, then a film was pasted over the picture to indicate how the section should be displayed in the newspaper. The result was a BMW against a white background in the newspaper. Interestingly, or amusingly, they had neglected to wash the car before taking the photos. This may not have been noticed in the newspaper, but if you look at the enlargements of the photos taken at the time, the dirt is very noticeable.
