More van for less money
The Austin Morris J4 has remained almost completely unknown in this country. It was first launched in 1960 as the Morris Commercial J4. By the end (1974), it was also known as the BMC J4 or the Austin Morris J4.
The J4’s advantages included its compact dimensions (approx. 4.1 x 1.75 x 2 meters), a tight turning radius, a good payload, and a choice of either a four-cylinder diesel or gasoline engine. In addition, depending on the model, sliding doors made it easier to get in. It was available in a wide variety of configurations, such as a panel van, a pickup, a camper, or with custom body styles.
Of course, the J4 was meant to be seen as reliable and fuel-efficient, but also very affordable. That’s why the title of the sales brochure from its final years of production was “The more for less van”—in other words, more for less.
