Memories of the touring car legend Dieter Glemser (obituary)
Dieter Glemser passed away on the night of June 10, 2026 at the age of 87. Most racing fans remember him as a Capri and Escort driver. Glemser also celebrated his greatest successes with these Ford models. He became German racing champion several times, but also European touring car champion in 1971. His victory in the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps in the Capri RS 2600 is also unforgettable.
Glemser and Soler-Roig achieved an average speed of 182.690 km/h and completed 311 laps of 14.1 km each, nine more than the previous record.
Less well known are his stints at the wheel of Mercedes models, in rallying and at the wheel of prototypes/sports cars.
On the occasion of his 80th birthday, Rainer Braun wrote an extensive article . Among other things, he wrote: "The man was an absolute stroke of luck for any team boss: calm, confident, easy to look after, loyal, incredibly fast and not even a material murderer to boot."
After the end of his racing career, triggered by a serious accident, he nevertheless remained loyal to motor racing, managing the Renault 5 one-make cup series and the Ford Fiesta Ladies Cup, among others.
He remained involved in racing into old age and always kept himself physically fit by cycling. Now he has sadly passed away, perhaps the fastest material protector in German racing.
