A forgotten DAF
People were already thinking about practical and easy-to-use cars in the sixties. DAF already offered a very user-friendly "automatic" with the Variomatic, but the OSI company realized that the concept could be optimized for the city.
The DAF City was presented at the Turin Motor Show in the late fall of 1966.
Automobil Revue wrote in its review of the show:
"As its main attraction, OSI created a modern-shaped and Daf-City christened city car with a high cabin, truncated rear and sliding door on the left-hand side. The vehicle is designed to make do with limited space. The Variomatic transmission is also particularly suitable for a city car."
However, the DAF City did not make it beyond prototype status, but some of the ideas reappeared in the Peugeot 1007, which was built between 2004 and 2009.
However, the Peugeot wasn't really any prettier than the OSI DAF City ...
P.S. However, there was a "production happy ending" for the DAF City, as a diecast model was built thousands of times by Corgi Toys. Even with functioning sliding doors and tailgate.
