Unorthodox dashboards and interior designs are usually associated with concept cars. Creative designers were already visualizing LCD screens and the like in the 1970s, long before the technology was really mature and available. However, cockpits also appeared in production vehicles, which certainly had to look futuristic at the time.
The example shown above is from the Alfa Romeo 90, a saloon that had a short life, but some versions are certainly remembered for their unusual speedometer and rev counter. Whether this was practical is another question.
