Classic pearls of the future - Alfa Romeo Brera
02/03/2014
When the Alfa Romeo Brera was presented as a concept car in Geneva in 2002, it outshone most of the other vehicles at the motor show. Giorgetto Giugiaro from Italdesign had done a great job. And the technology also spoke for itself, as Maserati V8 technology made its presence felt under the elegant estate car/sports car guise.
The positive public response motivated Alfa Romeo to bring the Brera onto the road, and the series version was announced for 2005.
Three years later, the Alfa Romeo Brera was available to buy. While the shape had remained almost the same, the technology had been replaced by the more popular GM/Fiat premium platform, which was also used by the Alfa Romeo 159. This meant engines with four and six cylinders, but also high weight, especially in the 4x4 version with the large engine. Of course, the scissor doors of the concept car also fell by the wayside and the interior also had to suffer somewhat under the cost pressure.
From 2008, the six cylinders could also be combined with just two driven wheels. Production came to an end in 2010 after just five years. After all, 21,786 units had been built and their multi-award-winning design was to secure the car's future classic status, even if the technology was not quite as exotic as the exterior might suggest.
