Classic pearl of the future - Audi Avant RS2
02/14/2014
The Audi( 80) Avant RS2 is celebrating its 20th birthday this year. When it was presented in 1994, it was the high-flyer in the station wagon segment. 315 hp (232 kW) and 410 Newton meters of torque at 3000 rpm were performance figures that only a few super sports cars could otherwise boast.
Thanks to the six-speed gearbox and selectable limited slip differential on the rear axle, the power was transferred to the ground via all four wheels, and 5.4 seconds was enough to reach 100 km/h. At 262 km/h, the forward thrust was then slowed down by the aerodynamics, which also suffered a little from the large amount of air required by the five-cylinder turbo engine.
The super-turbo estate was developed together with Porsche, which also built the car in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. Even a few parts from the Porsche shelf could be found on the Audi sprayed in anthracite, blue or silver-grey, such as the rear-view mirrors, the internally ventilated brake disks with red-painted four-piston calipers and the rims.
The RS 2 cost almost DM 100,000 at the time, a huge sum for a compact estate car from Audi, which still looked bluntly like the well-behaved Audi 80 Avant (B4). But it sold better than expected. A total of 2908 vehicles were built, achieving cult status early on, which should have ensured their entry into the classic car segment. But even today, it is not easy to buy a reasonably priced original vehicle with a manageable mileage and history. Buying one of the three RS2 saloons, which are also said to have been produced, is probably impossible.
