McLaren F1 wins the "Coppa d'Oro" audience award at the Concorso d'Elegance Villa d'Este
Does wealth make you beautiful? Well, you might think so with the McLaren F1 , but wealth here stands for the increase in value that the three-seater mid-engined sports car has experienced in recent years. Auctions have seen bids in the double-digit millions for these rarities. A total of 64 of the "normal" road-going version are said to have been produced, plus five F1 LM road-going versions and three F1 GTs.
28 cars were built for racing as GTRs, some of which were converted for use on public roads. Then there were the five prototypes. All with BMW V12 engines.
One of these road-going GTRs was awarded the Coppa d'Oro yesterday by the audience at the Concorso d'Elegance Villa d'Este. The owner is clearly delighted.
But other visitors to the beauty contest also admired the fast sports car, such as Jo Ramirez, the man with the blue cap, white trousers and white shoes in the picture at the top. The Mexican was once the team manager of the McLaren F1 team, working for the racing team from 1984 to 2001.
The Concorso continues today, Sunday, with the public day. Anyone who makes the journey to Cernobbio and arrives in the park of Villa Erba will also be able to see the BMW Concept Skytop presented by BMW designer Adrian van Hooydonk on Friday evening, a concept car based on the BMW 8 Series, which is intended to quote historical models such as the BMW Z8 and the BMW 503.
