When the Ford Model A was one of the most popular classics
When I first became interested in older cars in the seventies, the Ford A was one of the most popular classics of all. It was in such high demand that even replicas were made that cost only about half as much as the original, which often cost over DM 50,000/CHF 40,000.
However, the tide has now turned for the Model A, which was built 4.86 million times in just under five years. Prices have fallen and other classic cars have taken its place as the ideal entry-level classic.
The 1930 Ford Model A Sport Coupé pictured above was sold in the USA at the Bonhams Gilded Age auction on April 27, 2024 for just EUR 8854 or CHF 8568. However, if you compare the USD 9520 achieved with the original price of less than a thousand American dollars at the time, the car has actually held its value quite well. However, the increase in value has probably been eaten up by inflation and maintenance investments.
I, for one, am still delighted every time I see a Ford Model A on the road, such as last weekend at the Older Classics.
