Watching cars in the café
07/24/2023
Even 40 years ago, I enjoyed sitting at the side of the road in a café or restaurant and watching the traffic. I was interested in interesting cars, of course, but also in the mix of vehicles in general. I can remember sitting in the Gran Café on Limmatquai in Zurich in the 1980s and watching the cars go by. The photo is almost exactly from that time and shows the "ideal" arrangement of the tables.
Today, however, almost only bicycles or streetcars pass by there, but there are still some coffee houses and restaurants in Zurich that provide tables directly on the street. The entire Zwischengas editorial team occasionally eats right on Albisriederplatz and every classic car that passes by is of course noticed and celebrated.
Yesterday was another day when I was able to relax and enjoy a coffee while watching the traffic on Zurich's Utoquai. The comparatively low number of classic cars was striking. Was it the vacation season or the comparatively high temperatures? In any case, an MGB Roadster, a Ferrari 308 GTS and an American from the sixties were practically all that caught my eye, while nineties cars were somewhat better represented. And what I also noted inwardly was that the old cars were much less noticeable acoustically than the modern super sports cars and hot-rodded compact saloons in the style of a Mercedes-Benz A-Class or a two-seater BMW.
