Summary
Even before the Second World War, the Mercedes-Benz 170 V of the W 136 model series sold extremely well. After the war, however, it was successfully rebuilt, because even after 15 years of construction, it was still technically modern. Another 70 years later, you can still feel how good the 170 V was back then and why its owners loved it. This driving report is about a Mercedes-Benz 170 Va from 1950, tells the story of the model and shows the vehicles in current and historical pictures. Brochures and a sound sample are also included.

Preview (beginning of the article)
The Mercedes-Benz 170 V was the Stuttgart manufacturer's most successful pre-war car, and it also laid the foundations for post-war reconstruction. In February 1936, the Mercedes-Benz 170 V (internally known as the W 136) was presented at the Berlin IAMA. It differed significantly from its predecessor, the W 15. On the one hand, the bodywork was more modern and rounded, while on the other, a four-cylinder engine of the same size replaced the previous six-cylinder engine at the front. The "downsizing" also lowered the price. 70,000 units of the W 136 were delivered by 1942. Technically, the 170 V was the same as its predecessor, with the exception of the engine and gearbox. Independent front suspension and a swing axle ensured good handling characteristics, while four hydraulically controlled drum brakes provided the necessary deceleration. However, the box-section frame of the W 15 had given way to a more modern tubular frame construction with oval-shaped longitudinal members.
