"Build this Road Rover" was the decree from the Rover board to Spencer Wilks in April 1953. At that time, the ideas for a more elegant and socially acceptable version of the Land Rover were already quite concrete.
The off-road station wagon was to go into production as early as 1957. But nothing came of it, because Roverhad other problems in the second half of the 1950s.
So the "Road Rover" remained a prototype, which was perhaps a good thing when you look at it today. The second attempt was much more convincing. The Range Rover became a great success from 1969 onwards and paved the way for many generations of SUVs.
