Wasn't there something else? The Super Golf III

In 1993, we heard for the first time about a VW Golf that would make all other Golfs of the time look old. "auto motor und sport " spoke of the Silver Arrow with the VW badge. The Golf was intended for use in rallying, but that never happened. This would have required 2500 units to be built, which could have been sold for DM 80,000.
The Super Golf no longer had much to do with a normal Golf III. The two-liter engine was completely new, with an aluminum block, aluminum head, 16 valves, turbocharger and water injection, producing 275 hp in standard trim. All four wheels were driven. The rear wheels were suspended on a multi-link axle, as used in much later Golf generations, and the all-wheel drive was active, 25 to 100 % of the power could be sent to the rear wheels. Even the transmission was completely new and had six gears. Most of the components and the bodywork were developed just for this A59, as it was called. And yet no more than a handful of cars were ever built.
If the two Americans who were allowed to test drive the A59 at Lime Rock are to be believed, it is said to be quite easy to drive. They simply call it the "holy grail". Nice video!
