The challenge of youngtimer maintenance
01/29/2023
You would think that maintaining a car from the 1990s or early 2000s would not pose any major problems. However, this can be deceptive and even comparatively simple defects can lead to a total economic loss. These vehicles have typically left the time window in which car manufacturers keep all the necessary spare parts in stock. At the same time, expertise in garages is dwindling and the typical brand representative is no longer interested in the old car.
Of course, there are exceptions, i.e. cars for which both the necessary replacement components and the knowledge still exist, but this is no longer the case for some young classics.
Time and again, readers tell us about their odysseys in the search for spare parts or specialists. The problem is made more difficult by increasingly complex electronics and, in some cases, the need to be able to use model-specific diagnostic devices (before the introduction of the OBD/OBD2 standard interfaces).
We are considering launching a large survey on this topic. But first we would like to hear some stories from our readers about this problem? So if you have had any experiences (positive or negative) with the maintenance of your Youngtimer (current model years 1993-2003), simply enter a comment on this article. We promise to read all comments.
