How did the big Peugeot fare against the Mercedes 250/280, the BMW six-cylinder engines, the Ford Granada and Opel Commodore/Admiral - but also against the Renault 30 TS and Volvo 264 with the same V6 engine? An additional large model must first find a buyer base within the same brand in order to achieve a permanent increase before the factory and dealers can break into the competition. In this respect, the starting chances for the Peugeot 604 are not bad, as the model designation alone makes clear its position above the 504, which has been the best-selling foreign car in the two-liter class on the German market for years. The Peugeot 504 TI with 104 hp injection engine (target price DM 17,130 including freight) has been the subject of requests for a step-up model for several years. The jump to the Peugeot 604 with a 136 hp carburetor engine for DM 22,485 is not quite as great as in the Renault range between the R 16 and the likewise newly launched R 30 TS.
