A Bentley called Java

Java is an island or a programming language, but can also simply stand for coffee. But Java is also the name of a Bentley that only existed once. In March 1994, the Bentley Java stood at the Geneva Motor Show and attracted a lot of attention, partly because not too many really new cars had been seen from Bentley at that time.

"Bentley's Concept Java also sparkles, albeit in the classic British tradition. Despite its modern, probably even streamlined body shape, the sporty convertible coupé retained the Bentley radiator grille and all other aristocratic features. A 3.5-liter V8 engine with 32 valves and twin turbochargers, developed together with Cosworth, could accelerate the Java to a top speed of 270 km/h with "sufficient power", but is supposed to cut out electronically at 250 km/h. A carbon fiber hardtop transforms the 4.74-meter-long four-seater into a harmonious coupé."
The Automobil Revue had a little more to report, with 2/3 A3 pages printed with the description of the prototype. The text ended with the words:
"Bentley's Java project combines traditional values and high-tech in a compact yet prestigious luxury object. It is to be hoped that the start of production will not be too long in coming."
But it was not to be. The prototype coincided with the time when Rolls-Royce and Bentley decided to work with BMW engines, and parallel further development of the interesting prototype was probably no longer a priority. However, the car was not destroyed like so many other concept cars, but is said to have been sold in a slightly modified form to the Sultan of Brunai.
Of course, representatives of the press received detailed documentation at the time, which we have filed in the Zwischengas archive, as well as the press photo from the time .
