The last factory McLaren M23
12/15/2021
The McLaren M23 Formula 1 monoposto is one of the most successful racing cars of all time, as it managed to remain competitive for five seasons in its career from 1973 to 1977, winning two drivers' F1 world championship titles (1974: Emerson Fittipaldi; 1976: James Hunt) and one constructors' title (1974).
The M23 was designed by Gordon Coppuck with the support of John Barnard and was based on the M16 Indianapolis 500 car. The proven Ford-Cosworth V8 served as the engine.
The last works M23 was chassis M23/12, which was driven by Jochen Mass, who finished second in Anderstorp and fourth in Jarama and Monte Carlo in 1977.
Photographer Stuart Adams was able to photograph the car several times in 2021. His photos are compiled in a collection that is well worth a look.
P.S. Chassis M23/14 was also built for a customer, while M23/13 was omitted out of superstition.
