There's a Benz in front of the Chancellery...
After 23 years, the time has come: the German Chancellor is driving a Mercedes-Benz again. In future, Olaf Scholz will be chauffeured around Germany in an armored S 680 Guard.
SPD party comrade Gerhard Schröder first dared to be unfaithful to Stuttgart in 1998 and chose a VW Phaeton from his home state of Lower Saxony as his official car. He later replaced it with an Audi A8. Angela Merkel also preferred the top-of-the-range model from Ingolstadt.
The Mercedes tradition, which lasted over 40 years, was established by Konrad Adenauer in the 1950s. This bond between the chancellor and the body was so strong that "the old man from Rhöndorf" gave the entire W 186 model series its name: "Adenauer". No chancellor has managed that since. Since then, the choice of a Mercedes-Benz as the chancellor's car has become more and more common - until 2021.
So perhaps in thirty years' time, the current S-Class will no longer be remembered under the name W 223 - but will simply be called "Scholz" ...
