Well, how can a VW Beetle steam as a car with an air-cooled engine?
In fact, this VW 1200 no longer had a petrol engine, as it had been converted to run on steam. The conversion was thanks to the American Richard J. Smith, who fed his 1958 Beetle with a mixture of petrol, kerosene and paint thinner.
The photo, which appeared in ams issue 13/1967, was taken in the second half of the 1960s at the annual meeting of the Steam Automobile Club in Greenboro, North Carolina. The steaming Beetle received a lot of applause there, as most steam cars tend to date from the 1920s or even earlier decades.
I wonder if this converted VW Beetle has survived and is still steaming today?
