Once again the most expensive car in the world - Ferrari 250 GTO sold for over EUR 60 million
Once again, a Ferrari 250 GTO has been sold for a record price. Initially rumored at USD 80 million, the car now appears to have changed hands for a sale price of USD 70 million. That would be just over EUR 60 million or a little less than CHF 70 million.
The GTO being sold is a 4153 GT from 1963, which finished fourth overall in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Pierre Dumay/"Elde" at the wheel on June 15/16, 1963. However, the car's most famous success was its victory in the 1964 Tour de France, when Lucien Bianchi and Georges Berger drove it to victory.
The silver-colored car could be seen from time to time, for example at the Concours d'Elégance in Bensberg Castle in 2012, when it still wore yellow stripes, or at the Concours Chantilly Arts & Elégance Richard Mille 2015 ( picture above), when the French national colors were again used as stripes across the car.
At USD 70, 4153 GT trumps the few other GTOs that have changed hands in recent years, such as 5111 GT ( USD 52 million, EUR 38.4 million or CHF 47.6 million) in 2013 or the 3851 GT sold by Bonahms in Quail Lodge ( USD 38.11 million, CHF 37.495 million).
But the USD 70 million is actually a mere pittance, as the American company Github, which hardly anyone knows and which provides the developer infrastructure for software construction, has just been sold for USD 7.5 billion. With this sum, you could easily buy all 39 Ferrari 250 GTOs and still have around five billion left over.
P.S. Incidentally, the last GTO sale that was made public was that of 3387 GTs in 2016. Talacrest asked a price of £45 million (EUR 53 million or CHF 56 million) for the blue GTO. We do not know whether the sale went through at the time, at least it was not officially communicated.
