They were very popular, the rear hinged windows. They were found on Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Opel, Renault and Volkswagen, but also on Ferrari and Porsche.
In summer, they provided targeted ventilation of the car and even a stationary vehicle could be parked with the rear windows open without thieves clearing out the entire car.
But who actually invented it? And why did it disappear? We don't know either, but the fact is that it was already known in the 1950s and that almost all brands used it in two-door vehicle variants in the 1960s to 1980s. The air conditioning system then probably put an end to the practical hinged window.
