The very special beetle
10/09/2016
In 1985, the VW Beetle was 50 years old, and Wolfsburg celebrated with an anniversary Beetle, even though the rear-engined Volkswagen had of course been rolling off the production line in Mexico for a long time. But it was still popular.
So it was given a pewter gray paint job and a four-spoke sports steering wheel from the VW Golf II GTI. 3150 units were built and they were given special fabric upholstery, but the normal 1.2-liter engine with 34 hp. In addition, there were "Maltese" steel sports rims and green heat-insulating glass, as well as a radio from Blaupunkt that went by the name of "Braunschweig".
Collectors recognized the symbolic value of the anniversary Beetle and stored it, like the one that was sold at Motorworld Classics in Berlin on Saturday. The Beetle was listed for EUR 36,500 and was still wrapped in the factory plastic and Parafine transport protection. According to the seller, the car was checked every year by a VW dealer.
The only question is what to do with the Beetle now. Because when you drive it, it's no longer a wrapped-up museum piece ...
You can still see the 50-year-old Beetle until this evening at the Motorworld Classics classic car fair in Berlin , which also has a few other delicacies to offer.
