How do you make a station wagon sexy?
Station wagons were not considered particularly attractive, especially in the sixties. The lifestyle station wagon had not yet been invented. These practical vehicles were mainly bought by tradesmen and business people who were able to transport loads during the week but did not have to do without a spacious car for the whole family at the weekend.
The Triumph brochure designers therefore came up with something special to make the station wagon visually more tasteful. The result can be seen here and it is likely to have attracted a lot of male attention.
Of course, the practical advantages of the estate car were also mentioned in the brochure:
"You can really take everything with you in the Herald estate car. Spaciousness is combined with fashionable elegance. The rear door folds upwards and is held up by telescopic struts during loading and unloading. Dimensions of the load compartment: height: 1.1 5 m, width: 1.21 m length: 1.74 m.
Spare wheel and tools are stowed under the platform with light metal ribs - they can be reached in seconds."
But were the men still interested after devouring the photo?
The entire sales brochure can of course be found in the Zwischengas archive , as can the article on the extraordinary Triumph Herald.
