The beginnings of the Nardo test track
09/03/2013
Almost exactly 34 years ago, Fiat inaugurated a 12.6-kilometre high-speed test track in Nardo, which is still in use today. It was built with public funds in the south of Italy to support the economically ailing south.
The original wording of the short report in Automobil Revue No. 19/1979 was:
"As it is becoming increasingly difficult to subject new cars to the inevitable, demanding tests on normal roads, Fiat built a new driving test center in Nardo, southern Italy. It covers an area of 7 million m2 and includes a 12.5 km long multi-lane high-speed track, on which Daimler-Benz recently set new world records with a diesel car. The ongoing evaluation of the test results is carried out by computer in the 54m high control tower at the center of the site."
The picture can of course also be found in the Zwischengas archive in high resolution.
