Classic pearls of the future - BMW 635 CSI
07/29/2013
Perhaps we are almost too late to speak of the E24, as the 6-series was called from 1976-1989, as a future classic. After all, the 628 CSi, 630 CS, 633 CSi and 635 CSI had already been a classic since its presentation at the Geneva Motor Show in May 1976.
It skillfully continued the lines of its predecessor, the E9, while adding modern touches. Paul Bracq was responsible for the design and created a coupé with harmonious proportions and, from today's perspective, huge windows.
Safety was not neglected either, but also led to a significant increase in vehicle weight compared to its predecessor.
With 13 years of production and over 85,000 units built, the large coupé was also a commercial success, although not all models were equally common, with just under 6,000 2.8-liter versions being built.
The fastest variant of the E24, the M635 CSI, which was available between 1984 and 1989, was also relatively rare. The engine had already done similar service in the M1 and the 286 hp also helped the large coupé to achieve very good performance.
The BMW Coupé was also successful in motor racing, with title wins in the European Touring Car Championship and the DTM among the Munich Coupé's palmares. Its even more comfort-oriented successors did not make it that far.
