A Porsche 936 goes on vacation in Australia
03/18/2013
Porsche brought the beautiful 936 from 1981 from their museum to Australia for two events (Phillip Island and Melbourne).
Unfortunately, the weather did not play along with the supporting program for the Australian Grand Prix last weekend. The qualifying session on Saturday evening, like that of Formula One, had to be canceled or postponed due to bad weather.
Klaus Bischof commented: "That was for the best. We want to get our car back to Stuttgart in one piece. Under these circumstances, that could have been difficult, although we have a reliable driver in Davison. But the problem is the other cars, some of which are equipped with unsuitable rain tires and pose a driving challenge that is difficult to master in these conditions.
The former Le Mans-winning car had two outings in Australia, both of which were in extreme weather conditions. In Philip Island, the drivers and engines struggled in the heat of around 38 degrees Celsius and just a week later in Melbourne's Albert Park, the temperature plummeted to around 16 degrees and monsoon-like showers were reported. It was a shame that the cars were only on show for such a short time, as the field of 38 vehicles from the CanAm and super sports car eras was filled with many great rarities.
A report on the 1981 24 Hours of Le Mans and the victorious Porsche 936 can of course be found in the Zwischengas archive.
