50 years of the Pagoda - the Mercedes 230 SL from 1963
03/06/2013
In March 1963, exactly 50 years ago, the new sports car from Mercedes Benz was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show; it was called the 230 SL and was a technical treat. With an in-line six-cylinder engine and fuel injection, the fast-paced car belonged to the avant-garde.
Visually, it broke new ground and the hardtop with its "sagging" roof was a particular source of controversy. Fans of the pure sports car were somewhat disappointed by the comfort design of the newcomer, but its success on the market proved the engineers from Stuttgart right.
It was built until it was replaced by the even more comfortable 350 SL, which, with eight cylinders, was able to advance into new performance regions, but did not differ too much from its popular predecessor in terms of design.
To this day, the Pagoda, as the sports car known internally as the R113 is called by fans, is one of the most popular classic cars of all.
Some of the most beautiful pictures of the birthday child can be seen in the picture magic "Pagoda" .
