The anti-Corvette - Ford Cougar II concept car from 1963
The Ford Cougar II was built as one of three so-called X-Cars for the 1964 World's Fair in New York.
The aim was to showcase styling ideas for the future. The red spray-painted prototype had a plastic body that sat on the substructure of an AC Cobra (CSX2004). The V8 engine had to be set back in relation to the Cobra to allow enough room for a flowing and elegant line.
The Cougar II captivated with its almost supernatural elegance and its deep and gently flowing lines, thanks in part to the installation of folding headlights. It was equipped with wire wheels and, if it had ever gone into production, would certainly have been able to compete with the Corvette Stingray.
