Gloves were part of driving a car
09/13/2012
Hardly anyone still drives a modern car with gloves on. Not only can steering wheels in luxury vehicles be heated in modern times, the thick leather rims of today's vehicles can be easily gripped and held with bare hands.
Things were different in the past, when steering wheels were made of wood or plastic and had relatively thin rims. Fine leather gloves helped to ensure that you didn't lose your grip and were able to steer safely despite sweaty hands.
So it's no wonder that the obligatory gloves can be found at the top of the dashboard of the Porsche 901 test car shown here (picture from 1964). And it's no wonder that the glove compartment is called that, because these utensils always had to be there. And anyone who still has the key scenes of the Steve McQueen film "Bullit" in their head will remember that the gangster in the Dodge Charger also wears gloves during the minute-long chase, which ultimately does him no good ...
