The most expensive Aston of all time?
09/26/2012
There are rumors in the scene about the most expensive Aston Martin of all time. The 1957 Aston Martin DBR1/2 is being offered by Talacrestand a price of £20 million, a good CHF 30 million or 25 million euros, is apparently being mentioned behind closed doors. It remains to be seen whether this will happen. But the conditions are certainly not bad.
The beautiful sports car has an impressive palmares with victories at Spa (1957), the Nürburgring (1957), Goodwood (TT, 1958 and 1959), the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Salvadori/Shelby at the wheel (1959), Rouen (1960). Stirling Moss, Carroll Shelby, Brooks and Trintignant, among many others, sat behind the wheel of this car.
As one of five original DBR1s built, it is a rarity and the individual cars differed in detail anyway, so that almost every one can be considered unique. Equipped with an in-line six-cylinder engine, weighing around 800 kg and fitted with a DeDion axle at the rear, the Aston was a very competitive sports car and it also impressed with a design created by Ted Cutting that was based on the shape of the DB3S.
Whether a buyer will be prepared to pay such a high sum remains to be seen, after all he could also invest the £ 20 million in a full-blown collection of all road Astons (DB 2, DB 4, DB 5, DB 6, DBS, DBS V8, Lagonda, etc.) and even add a racing car or two with the change. Both approaches could make sense as an investment, but the maintenance costs of an entire collection are likely to far exceed the manageable maintenance costs for the DBR1 racing car.
