Selective bidders at the Bonhams BMW auction in Munich
Last weekend, on Saturday, October 1, 2011 to be precise, Bonhams auctioned off rare BMW vehicles, motorcycles and automobilia at the BMW Museum.
42 cars went under the hammer, 55% were sold, 19 vehicles remained "standing". The BMW 303 from 1933, which we reported on in detail on Zwischengas, found a new owner for a net price of €47,000 (plus surcharges) and the Bertone show car BMW 'Spicup' from 1969, a mixture of coupé and spider, was the most expensive vehicle at the auction and found a new owner for a net price of €400,000.
In total, the value of the cars sold amounted to almost €1.2 million (net, before hammer prices), resulting in an average hammer price of €50,770.
What was particularly striking, however, was the reluctance of bidders for the later lot numbers and expensive vehicles. The Le Mans 3.0 CSI/L from 1976 (estimated price 325-375 k€) was just as unlikely to find a new owner as the BMW M1 ProCar from 1979 (estimated price 450-500 k€), the Frazer-Nash BMW 328 from 1937 (estimated price 450-550 k€) and the BMW 327/328 convertible from 1938 (estimated price 225-275 k€).
Even the otherwise very popular 3.0/3.2 CSL (Batmobile) did not all find an enthusiast.
While the red BMW Z1 from 1990 with few kilometers on the clock changed hands for € 21,000, the black Z1 from 1989 offered towards the end did not reach the minimum price (estimated price € 20-30 k). A whole series of racing cars, including a BMW 1800 Ti/SA from 1965 and a BMW 635 Csi from 1984, also failed to find a buyer.
