Am Sonntag dem 21. August fand der 67. Pebble Beach Concours d’Elégance statt. Mit 228 Teilnehmern aus 16 verschiedenen Ländern war die Vielfalt riesig. Ursprünglich war es ein kleiner Anlass mit Strassenrennen unter Kiefern und Zypressen, mittlerweile ist der Pebble Beach Concours d’Elégance zu einem International hoch geschätzten Wettbewerb geworden. Das Ziel bleibt jedoch auch nach 66 Jahren dasselbe - das mechanische Erbe zu erhalten.
Best of Show
Zum Best of Show 2016 wurde der Lancia Astura Pinin Farina Cabriolet von 1936 gekürt. Dieses Glanzstück räumte gleich dreimal ab - Den Sieg in seiner Kategorie, dem Titel “Gwenn Graham Most Elegant Convertible” und den Titel “Best of Show”
Das Cabriolet das einst Eric Clapton gehörte, wurde später von Pininfarina für die eigene Sammlung gekauft. Seit 2009 ist es in der Hand des heutigen Besitzers. Die letzten fünf Jahre brauchte er, um das Fahrzeug komplett zu restaurieren.
Heute brilliert der Lancia als Kombination aus sportlichen und stilvollen Attributen. In den Augen des Besitzers ist er technisch ausgeklügelt und sehr wandelbar. So müssen das auch die Juroren gesehen haben, als sie eine sicherlich schwere Entscheidung treffen mussten.
Die Konkurrenz
Viele starke Vertreter versuchten ihr Glück - so lassen sich auch die zwei weiteren nominierten für “Best of Show” sehen.
Der Delahaye 165 Figoni & Falaschi Cabriolet von 1938, der 1938 in Paris sein Debut gab, wurde bereits damals als schönstes Auto gepriesen. Der Stutz DV-32 LeBaron Convertible Victoria von 1931 war das letzte Modell von Stutz und gilt als einziger Prototyp.
Ford GT40
Drei Ford GT40 Mk. II standen 1966 in Le Mans auf dem Podest und das trotz hoher Ausfallquote. Zum fünfzigjährigen Jubiläum des Sieges in Le Mans gab es eine eigene Kategorie für alle Ford GT40. Der Ford GT40 Mk II von 1966 - dem Triumphjahr - mit Fahrgestellnummer P/1046 wurde als Sieger erkoren.
Aus Werbezwecken stieg Ford 1962 wieder in den internationalen Rennsport ein, nachdem er sich 1957 zurückgezogen hatte. Nach dem erfolglosen Versuch, Ferrari aufzukaufen, beschloss Ford, selber in den Langstreckenrennsport einzusteigen. So kam es, dass der GT40 entwickelt wurde, der 1966 den erhofften Sieg über Ferrari feierte.
Eigene Concours-Kategorien waren u.a. auch Bizzarrini, Chapron, dem Lamborghini Miura und BMW mit ihrem 100. Geburtstag gewidmet.
Preservation Trophy
Auch die FIVA (Fédération International des Véhicules Anciens) verlieh eine eigene Trophäe, und zwar, dem best erhaltenen Fahrzeug. Als besonders beachtenswert gilt dabei, dass möglichst viele Teile noch original sind, sowie das Material und das Aussehen den Urzustand wiederspiegelt.
Es gewann der Thomas Model No. 19 von 1902. Mit einem einzelnen Zylinder und 8 PS war es das erste Modell von Thomas.
La Tour d’Elégance
Nicht wie immer verlief dieses Jahr die Tour d’Elégance von Pebble Beach. Um der Feuerwehr nicht in die Quere zu kommen, die sich bemühte, die Brände in der Ventana Wildernis bis zum Big Sur zu löschen, musste die Route angepasst werden. Eine Stunde später als anfänglich geplant ging es dann los, auf gekürzter Route in eine andere Richtung. Schön war sie trotzdem, die Ausfahrt.
