The 67th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elégance took place on Sunday, August 21. With 228 participants from 16 different countries, the variety was huge. Originally a small event with road races under pine and cypress trees, the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elégance has since become a highly regarded international competition. However, even after 66 years, the aim remains the same - to preserve the mechanical heritage.
Best of Show
The Lancia Astura Pinin Farina Cabriolet from 1936 was named Best of Show 2016. This gem won three awards - the victory in its category, the title of "Gwenn Graham Most Elegant Convertible" and the title of "Best of Show"
The convertible that once belonged to Eric Clapton was later bought by Pininfarina for its own collection. It has been in the hands of the current owner since 2009. It has taken him the last five years to completely restore the vehicle.
Today, the Lancia shines as a combination of sporty and stylish attributes. In the eyes of the owner, it is technically sophisticated and very versatile. This must have been how the judges saw it when they had to make what was certainly a difficult decision.
The competition
Many strong representatives tried their luck - so the two other nominees for "Best of Show" are also worth seeing.
The Delahaye 165 Figoni & Falaschi Cabriolet from 1938, which made its debut in Paris in 1938, was already praised as the most beautiful car at the time. The Stutz DV-32 LeBaron Convertible Victoria from 1931 was Stutz's last model and is considered the only prototype.
Ford GT40
Three Ford GT40 Mk. II finished on the podium at Le Mans in 1966, despite a high failure rate. For the fiftieth anniversary of the victory at Le Mans, there was a separate category for all Ford GT40s. The Ford GT40 Mk II from 1966 - the triumphant year - with chassis number P/1046 was chosen as the winner.
For promotional purposes, Ford re-entered international racing in 1962 after withdrawing in 1957. After the unsuccessful attempt to buy out Ferrari, Ford decided to enter endurance racing itself. This led to the development of the GT40, which celebrated the hoped-for victory over Ferrari in 1966.
Separate Concours categories were also dedicated to Bizzarrini, Chapron, the Lamborghini Miura and BMW with its 100th birthday.
Preservation Trophy
The FIVA (Fédération International des Véhicules Anciens) also awarded its own trophy to the best-preserved vehicle. It is particularly important that as many parts as possible are still original and that the material and appearance reflect the original condition.
The winner was the Thomas Model No. 19 from 1902, the first Thomas model with a single cylinder and 8 hp.
La Tour d'Elégance
This year's Tour d'Elégance at Pebble Beach was not as usual. The route had to be adjusted so as not to get in the way of the fire department, which was trying to put out the fires in the Ventana Wilderness up to Big Sur. An hour later than originally planned, we set off on a shortened route in a different direction. But it was still a great trip.
