Dass auch in den USA der Versteigerungsalltag nicht immer einfach ist, zeigte die Auktion von RM in Auburn (Indiana) am 31. Mai und 1. Juni 2019. An den beiden Tagen wurden immerhin 274 Autos (inklusive zwei Anhängern) im Wert von USD 10,8 Millionen (EUR 9,7 Millionen, CHF 10,8 Millionen) angeboten.

Insgesamt konnten davon rund zwei Drittel verkauft werden. Die Höchstgebote lagen im Schnitt ebenfalls bei zwei Dritteln des Schätzwerts. Der Verkaufserlös für die Autos betrug damit rund USD 4,7 Millionen (EUR 4,1 Millionen, CHF 4,7 Millionen).
51 Marken, US-Dominanz
Es wurden Fahrzeuge von insgesamt 51 Marken angeboten. Dominierend waren die US-Hersteller, allen voran Ford mit 55 Fahrzeugen, Chevrolet mit 44 Autos, Packard mit 20 (!) und Cadillac mit 14.
Einzig Mercedes-Benz konnte mit 15 Wagen ein ähnlich grosses Kontingent beisteuern, während die Zahl von acht Hudson oder neun Buick zeigt, dass man sich in den USA befand.
Einige Exoten gab es natürlich auch, so etwas REO, Haynes, Pierce-Arrow oder Amphicar.
Im Schnitt waren die Autos 56 Jahre alt, doch reichte das Spektrum von 1903 bis 2016, deckte also elf Jahrzehnte ab.
Packard ohne Brillanz
Die Bieter wollten den Empfehlungen des Auktionshauses in vielen Fällen nicht folgen. Besonders die Fahrzeuge der Marke Packard erreichte im Schnitt nur gerade 48 Prozent des mittleren Schätzwerts, bei Mercedes-Benz waren es 57 Prozent, bei Hudson 59 Prozent, bei Ford 66 Prozent, bei Chevrolet 71 Prozent und bei Chrysler 72 Prozent.
Ein Packard One-Twenty Convertible Coupe von 1940 wurde etwa anstatt der erwarteten USD 15’000 bis 20’000 für gerade einmal USD 3300 verkauft, um ein Beispiel zu nennen.
Da rund ein Drittel der Autos ohne Mindestpreis versteigert wurden, musste gerade mancher Packard-Einlieferer teilweise mit sehr tiefen Geboten zufrieden sein.
Der überraschende AMC AMX
Für die grösste Überraschung sorgte ein AMC AMX von 1979, der dem neuen Besitzer anstatt USD 6000 bis 10’000 immerhin USD 24’200 wert war, also fast das Dreifache des Schätzwerts.

An diese Leistung kamen nur noch ein Lincoln Continental Convertible von 1965 (USD 12’100 anstatt 3000 bis 6000) und ein relativ neuer Bentley Arnage Red Label von 2001 (USD 38’500 anstatt 20’000 bis 25’000) heran.
Über dem Schätzwert, wenn auch meist knapp, wurden auch einige Europäer versteigert, so etwa ein Mercedes-Benz 280 SL von 1971 UUSD 93’500), ein MG TD Mk II von 1953 (USD 27’500) oder ein Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III BJ8 von 1967 (USD 81’400).
Schnäppchen?
Viele Autos wurden sehr günstig verkauft. So konnte man sich beispielsweise einen Mercedes-Benz SL 500 von 1998 für USD 5060 (geschätzt waren USD 15’000 bis 20’000) kaufen.
Einen AMC Javelin SST von 1970 gab es für USD 3575, einen Mercedes-Benz 300 SL von 1991 für USD 4950.
Auch ein MGB von 1977 ging fast für ein Butterbrot (USD 2640) weg.
Und auch die USD 2860 für einen Mercedes-Benz 380 SL von 1982 oder die USD 6270 für einen 450 SL von 1980 liegen deutlich unter dem, was man in Europa für ein ähnliche Autos zahlen würde. Allerdings - erst die genaue Inspektion wird enthüllen, ob diese Wagen wirklich Schnäppchen waren.
Viele Autos mit fairen Preisen
Ein Ferrari Testarossa von 1988 für USD 99’000 oder ein Chevrolet Corvette Sing Ray von 1967 für USD 81’400, dies scheinen faire Preise zu sein. Dies zeigt sich auch daran, dass weit über die Hälfte der Wagen auf Höchstgebote zwischen 60 und 100 Prozent des mittleren Schätzwerts kamen.
Trotzdem dürfen die RM-Verantwortlichen mit dem Ergebnis nicht ganz glücklich gewesen sein. Zwar war die Auburn-Versteigerung anders positioniert als die Hochglanz-Verkäufe von Pebble Beach, Villa d’Erba oder Paris, trotzdem aber würde man natürlich nach jedem Wochenende gerne neue Rekorde verkünden.
Dass man nicht auf der obersten Ebene antrat, zeigt sich auch beim teuersten Wagen der Versteigerung, einem Cord L-29 Convertible Phaeton Sedan von 1930 für USD 157’300.
