What is driving pleasure?
09/25/2024
Most people who buy an old (or sometimes a new) car do so because they want to have fun driving it.
But how is driving pleasure actually defined? When you start to think about it, you quickly realize that driving pleasure is very subjective. If you talk to different people, very different criteria can emerge that determine riding enjoyment. For one person, it's the handling or sportiness of the car that makes it fun to drive, while for another it's a big engine that shakes its power out of its sleeve and charges forward with ease. For some drivers, the sound of the engine may contribute significantly to the driving pleasure, for others it is almost irrelevant. For many classic car owners, a transmission that shifts precisely and quickly is an essential part of driving pleasure, while others may well be enthusiastic about automatic cars. While some strive for comfort and a leisurely glide, other drivers prefer fast serpentines that require a crisp chassis and direct steering. Some see an open-top car as a guarantee of driving pleasure, while others prefer a closed car.
As different as the cars of the last few decades are, so too are the definitions of driving pleasure that we have set for ourselves.
