An unequal duel at eye level
The Ford GT 40 and the Volvo 1800 S almost look like equals as they thunder side by side through the banked curve in Daytona on February 6, 1966. The blurred contours at the front and rear, however, give an idea of how much excess the white Ford driven by Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby was able to shred past the red Volvo with starting number 56.
But an uncompromising mid-engined racing car against a simple touring coupé without bumpers - that's not entirely fair either. That's why Ike Maxwell and William Martin don't compete in the prototype class, of course, but in the sports cars with a displacement of up to two liters. After 496 laps, they take fifth place - behind four Porsche Carrera GTSs.
Within 24 hours, the Ford with five times the engine power will pass the Volvo a further 181 times. And each time it will look for a brief moment as if they were on a par with each other.
