Aerodynamic and yet combi
02/02/2019
Estate cars are commercial vehicles in the broader sense. They were used by tradesmen to transport their tools and materials, and by greengrocers to deliver their heads of lettuce. At the weekend, the whole family could be driven to church or a picnic. There were certainly no great demands on aerodynamics, even less so in 1938.
However, Peugeot built the 202 according to American aerodynamic models in order to give it a streamlined shape. And it was part of the company's tradition to build a station wagon in addition to the saloon. The result was the streamlined 202 U Commerciale on a reinforced chassis variant.
The 1938 estate car, which is currently on display in the special show at the Bremen Classic Motorshow 2019 until Sunday, has a very special history. It is unrestored and belongs to the collection of the Protestant Church, which wants to restore it as part of a job creation project for the long-term unemployed, just like various other Citroëns and Peugeots from the 1930s to 1950s. "Neue Arbeit der Diakonie Essen" is the name of the facility in which 25 craftsmen are entrusted with this responsible task under the expert guidance of three master craftsmen. A nice thing, we think.
We will, of course, be reporting in detail on the Bremen Classic Motorshow.
