Summary
When the new Fiat 1100 was launched in 1953, it was ahead of the competition in many ways. Sporting talent and generous space made it a high-flyer. The Fiat did not lose its strengths even with the continuous model improvements, from which the family-friendly estate also benefited. This vehicle report tells the story of the model, over 1.8 million of which were produced and which, despite its importance, has almost been forgotten today.

Preview (beginning of the article)
When the Fiat 1100 was launched in 1953, the small saloon was well ahead of the competition from Renault (4 CV) and Volkswagen (Beetle). The Fiat offered more space and was significantly faster, although it only used some of the technology of its pre-war predecessor. Over the years, the 1100 matured like Swiss cheese and was actually built (in India) until the year 2000, but was replaced much earlier in this country by the front-wheel drive Fiat 128. The history of the Fiat 1100 goes back to 1937. The internally named 508 C and L "Balilla 1100" was built before the Second World War until 1939. Both variants had four doors, with the short "C" having a wheelbase of 242 centimetres and the long "L" stretching to 274 centimetres. Both were powered by small 1100 cc four-cylinder engines with overhead valves and produced between 30 and 32 hp.
