Can a classic car actually be versatile?
11/03/2018
As you know, we are currently conducting a vote for the most versatile classic car and have focused on coupés and convertibles from the sixties to the late seventies.
By "versatility", we mean the broad usability of the old car, which should be convincing on everyday trips as well as vacation trips, at a regularity rally or at the Concours d'Elégance. A real balancing act that few classic cars manage.
Our readers have already largely decided on their favorites in five of the six preliminary groups.
In Group 1, the Jaguar E-Type appears to be just ahead of the BMW 628-635 CS/i) Coupé.
In Group 2, the leading Mercedes-Benz 230-280 SL (Pagoda) is being pushed hard by the Alfa Romeo Bertone (Giulia Sprint/GT/GTV).
The Porsche 911, the Mercedes-Benz R107 (280-450 SL) and the BMW 2.8/3.0 CS/CSL Coupé were the clear winners in Groups 3 to 5.
The final round with the Fiat 124 Spider, Ferrari 308 GTB/GTS, Volvo P1800 S, MGA, VW-Porsche 914 and Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is still open and you can vote for your favorite from Monday.
We are delighted with the turnout, as over 2000 readers have already voted for one of the classics. Now it's time for the final spurt, as the six group winners for the final round will be decided at the end of next week. Then it's all about the sausage.
You can still take part, even in group elimination rounds that started earlier, as these are still open for votes until the final round. At the end, we will then see whether a truly versatile classic has emerged as the winner.
