Aerodynamics is not child's play

In the 1969 Formula 1 season, the wings on the monoposti literally grew into the sky. Wing profiles were mounted as high up in the air as possible above the front and rear axles in order to generate maximum downforce.
The forces acting on these wings were enormous, which is why one or two of them broke (as can be clearly seen in the picture above of Jacky Ickx in the Brabham). Although Jack Brabham took pole position in Kyalami in his "wing car", both Brabhams had to lay down their arms in the race due to broken wing mounts. No wonder the FIA put its foot down soon afterwards.
