Crashed car for half a million
08/24/2018
It doesn't even matter whether you pay in euros, USD or CHF: Mecum is auctioning off a Porsche 959 today( August 24, 2018) as part of Monterey Week and is giving an estimated price of USD 450,000 to 550,000. Half a million!
This Porsche 959 from 1987 with chassis number WP0ZZZ95ZHS900075 actually has a lot to offer. It is one of only 294 examples built and has just 3657 miles on the clock. It embodies what was possible at the time and is probably one of the best super sports cars of the 1980s.
Unfortunately, that darn 3657th mile was bad for the car. A massive front-end accident probably dampened the owner's enjoyment of the rare car, which according to Classic Data is being traded for EUR 850,000 in condition 2, which this car could probably be considered to have been in before the accident. Now he decided to sell it rather than repair it.
How much will the repair cost? Spare parts are unlikely to be readily available on eBay and specific parts are likely to be traded at pharmacy prices, if they are available at all. And the fact that Porsche used the most modern material technologies back then, i.e. Kevlar in composite construction, makes restoration seem even more expensive.
Well, we'll see if a buyer can be found. And whether the car will eventually reappear in almost pristine condition.
