The right architecture for the automobile
02/16/2018
Take a look at the two pictures side by side. The car - in both cases the same basic type, a Mercedes-Benz 8/38 - can certainly be easily assigned to an era, say the 1920s.
But the background, i.e. the buildings? One is far too old for the car, the other far too young, isn't it?
In any case, both pictures were taken around 1928. The modern building on the right dates from the same period as the Mercedes-Benz 8/38 Roadster, i.e. the late 1920s. At the time, people were talking about "New Building". Incidentally, the building was designed by Le Corbusier. It still looks modern today, while the car's age - 90 years after all - is very much in evidence. Modern cars look very different, but modern houses?
The topic is interesting, which is probably why the Emil Frey Classic Center in Safenwil (Switzerland) has dedicated a special exhibition called "Cars & Architecture" to it. We have reported on it.
The Mercedes pictures can of course also be viewed a little larger and there is a third one with the Eiffel Tower in Paris ...
