A DKW in-house construction with finesse
02/22/2018
This week, we had the opportunity to take a look around the depots of the classic car museum PS-Speicher in Einbeck . These depots are normally only shown to the public on special occasions and otherwise serve as the basis for the permanent exhibition and for special exhibitions. Of course, you could look there for hours and still find another rarity or special feature.
One car immediately caught our eye. It's a brown DKW in-house design, which is somewhere between the normal DKW 1000 Coupé and the flatter AU 1000 S (similar to the Ford Thunderbird). Overall, it looks harmonious and well done, but has a very special detail, the Auto-Union rings in the air intake on the hood. This reminded us of the Maserati 5000 GT by Pietro Frua, one of the most expensive cars in the world at the time.
Frua came up with a similar solution with the trident, a comparison that virtually ennobles the DKW self-build.
We will soon be reporting in detail on the PS Speicher, and incidentally also on the Maserati 5000 GT.
