Rare one-off BMW to be auctioned on eBay
04/29/2017
It's not every day that you find a rarity like this on eBay. Even if it is not visible at first glance, this is a BMWwith an eight-cylinder engine and coachwork by Beutler. The Beutler brothers were coachbuilders in Switzerland and were also known for their elegant coupés and convertibles based on the VW Beetle and Porsche 356.
The car is described as follows:
"The body is made of aluminum, only the roof and floor are made of steel. Only one Beutler BMW was produced in 1956. A second one was produced in 1961, but with a much simpler body shape."
According to the ebay advertisement, the car was luxuriously equipped at the time and the body alone cost more than a brand-new Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. Underneath the coupé body was BMW V8 technology, which was certainly one of the finest you could buy at the time.
Several of these coupés were planned at the time, the first design of which did not feature the characteristic kidney grille, but it was not to come to that.
When we last visited the auction site, the highest bid was just over EUR 9000, which is hardly enough. In order for the car to be sold successfully, a lot has to happen in the remaining seven days or so. The vehicle would be lucky.
It could also find a new owner who would complete the restoration as faithfully as possible and then show the elegant car to the public again.
More archive pictures of Beutler's BMW vehicles can be seen in a Bildermagie episode.
