From today's perspective, the author's first encounter with the Citroën XM is somehow symptomatic of the life of the successor to the legendary CX. Immediately after the presentation in 1990, a mixture of youthful curiosity and automotive enthusiasm drove the author behind the wheel of the demonstration XM for a weekend. But the joy of the test drive weekend with the extravagant French car was quickly followed by disillusionment. The play on the height regulator and the resulting strain on the hydraulic system had consequences. The V-belt of the high-pressure pump went on strike and the XM ended up stuck at a low level in a Hamburg parking garage with its steep ramps. The big Citroën on the ground, right at the start of its career. A low blow from which the beacon of hope never really recovered.
