The revolution that didn't happen - Tucker under the hammer
01/17/2018
The movie car from Francis Ford Coppola's 1988 business thriller "Tucker" starring Jeff Bridges will be auctioned this week by RM/Sotheby's in Scottsdale/Arizona . Not only is it one of the original movie cars, it is also the personal vehicle of its inventor Preston Tucker.
In 1948, the Tuckerwas probably one of the most revolutionary cars ever, as it already had seat belts, cornering lights and disc brakes. Only 50 of these cars were built, after which the brand disappeared into oblivion.
Was the car too advanced, or did GM and Chrysler fight back against Tucker, or was the financial backing too tight to help the Tucker Torpedo get off the ground with the 6-cylinder boxer rear engine of a helicopter?
In any case, Coppola's film shows with great suspense the great euphoria and the deep fall of the car manufacturer. The extremely historic car is expected to change hands for around 1.25 to 1.5 million dollars.
