The 2018 season is already in full swing with the Planai Classic ...
The snow returned just in time for the start of the 2018 season and, as desired, in huge quantities. A winter rally without snow is like a hill climb in the Netherlands.
Not so this year's Planai Classic. The atmosphere on the Dachstein road was still almost Christmassy, but the temperature was much more pleasant than last year.
There was no freezing of the cameras, only the cars had a hard time with the steep section and the wet snow. Only 13 vehicles were able to climb the road to the finish, with the rest incurring 1000 penalty points.
The humpback Volvo got stuck with a blocked gearbox and the Beetle suddenly had to stop with no oil pressure.
And then there are the two drivers in their open-top pre-war cars. They want to freeze and slide, duel for hundredths of a second at 40 km/h, or simply have fun for two days. The conditions are perfect. Of course, some people want double windshield wipers, one on the outside and the other on the inside, while others would like them to be bigger, with a little more light or more traction.
Driving a car like back then can still be great fun today.
The Planai Classicruns until January 6, 2018 in the Gröbming area.
